New light fixtures are a great way to transform any room in your home into something new. However, placing just any old light fixture in any room isn’t going to bring you the newly renovated room design that you’re looking for.

It takes a bit of effort and some information from this post to learn which light fixtures work best in what rooms.

Room lighting is key when tying a new space together, and different lighting types work better in different kinds of room.

Before you add your finishing touches on your newly renovated home, be sure to continue reading below. Here are several tips on how to choose the best light fixtures room-by-room!

The Living Room

Because the living room is one of the main rooms in your home where people spend their time, it’s essential that you provide plenty of layers of lighting to accommodate all different types of activities.

At the same time, you want to keep the lighting warm and welcoming. To do this, consider placing lighting in the room that’s directed towards the walls and the ceilings as well.

You can also use table lamps for task lighting. Place table lamps near reading chairs or around tables where you enjoy playing games.

Don’t hesitate to include accent lighting as well. If you have any statues in your living room, be sure to use lighting that casts its beams on your statues, paintings, plants, and other art pieces you might have.

The Bathroom

When adding new light fixtures to the bathroom, you’ll need to be sure to add enough bright lights. The bathroom is one of the one room in the house that needs the most lighting as possible. When thinking of a bathroom, you think of tons of natural light and a lot of artificial lighting as well.

Because bathrooms are also one of the smallest rooms in the house, it’s essential to have enough lighting to keep it bright, which helps make it seem larger than it actually is. One way to brighten it up is to add lighting behind and on top of the mirror. You can do this by placing a light on the side or directly under it.

You should also consider removing any ceiling-mounted fixtures and replacing them with several wall scones. The wall scones will light up your bathroom well enough and will highlight your mirror as well.

The Dining Room

The focal point of any dining room is the dining table, which is exactly where the focus of your lighting should be as well. Place light fixtures directly above your table and then install dimmers as well. Dimmers are a great way to make adjusting the environment easy.

This might come in handy when entertaining, for example. If possible, installing french doors that lead into your dining room from the outdoors is another plus. The ideal dining-room setting would include a chandelier that hangs above the table and wall scones all on a dimmer.

The Kitchen

For kitchen lighting, you want to use lights bright enough to keep the room well lit during the day and at night when needed. The kitchen’s main focus is on prepping and cooking food, so you’ll need enough ambient and task lighting. When considering where to place task lighting, think about where you perform the most tasks at.

Light fixtures directly above the counters and the sink are a perfect example! Sinks are generally near windows to take full advantage of all that beautiful natural light that comes in for the very reason that good light is needed while working at the sink.

Even if your sink is located near a window providing natural light, be sure to still install a ceiling-mounted light fixture right above it.

Use undercabinet lighting on all your cabinets that are positioned above your counters to provide an excellent light source for when you’re prepping and preparing foods. To tie everything together, include ambient lighting that reflects off of the ceiling.

The Bedroom

The bedroom has many uses for lighting, more than you might consider. For example, you’ll need to set up a lighting plan that includes the closets, bedside lighting, and room lighting as well. When looking to install bedside light fixtures for reading, consider using a wall-mounted fixture that can be adjusted to direct light on your reading materials.

Place one on either side of the bed and have them on their own switch so that one person can have their light on while the other one is off. This also helps you save energy money by not needing both lights on.

Remember that a bedroom is a place for relaxing, so consider using floor and table lamps along with wall-mounted fixtures to create a peaceful atmosphere. To make things even more relaxing, place a dimmer on them as well.

Your closet should have a brighter light fixture installed in it to make things easier to find. If you have a walk-in closet, you can also consider installing wall scones around a mirror to provide you with optimal lighting when getting dressed and ready for the day.
