5 Unique DIY Décor Ideas for Your Deck in 2021

Written By Glenn Prescot

What’s your deck like? Probably a couple of chairs and a wood table, right.

You have no idea what kind of treasure you are sitting on. The deck is a prime spot that has a lot of décor potential, which if done correctly can impress your guests.

Oh no… we are not talking about hanging a couple of fairy lights or placing potted plants on the steps. These décors are outdated and don’t really make your deck shine.

So are you ready to DIY your deck? We have got some simple and cheap décor ideas that you can easily try.

First decide: are you going for a comfortable and cozy look or something flashy? Maybe you like a combination of both these ideas. Don’t worry, we have got you covered.

We bring to you five unique DIY décor ideas for deck that you will fall in love with instantly:

1. Sleepy? Set Up a Nap Spot

Sometimes, on a weekend, the bed does not look so inviting when you want to take a short nap. You can’t exactly head out to the deck and sleep in the chair. NO to the ratty old, cloth hammock your kids hanged during their play time.

What about creating a designated nap spot? Not a bad idea, right. You can get a free-standing hammock  from Amazon like the one below which is perfect for a deck area.

Depending on the weather conditions in your area, maybe a hammock with hardwood spreader bars and a weather resistant finish will be better than one with a steel stand.

Place a mat on the deck and position the hammock over it. Place a few throw pillows and a blanket over the hammock and, a nightstand beside it. Your nap spot is ready!

2. Show Your Creativity with Bricks

If your deck is at the back of the house and has a cement floor space, then there are plenty of ways to get creative bricks. You can create a perimeter with colorfully painted bricks, a path that connects the back of your house to the front yard or our personal favorite one: a fire pit.

Simply dig a hole in the ground, place bricks in a circle (3 layers) and add firewood to it. Place a few chairs, potted plants and a folding table around the fire pit. Lastly, hide some garden lights in the plants. At night, when your kids will be roasting marshmallows over the firewood, you can turn on the lights and give them a night to remember.

3. Hang Hexagon Planters

If you have a small deck and not much room to decorate, then we suggest hanging the planters. Instead of placing potted plants on the deck, which your kids and dog might accidentally knock down, why not hang them from your home’s exterior.

Hexagon planters create a unique look, which you can position like the inside of a beehive. This will also make a great place for taking family photos.

You can also repurpose a portable ladder by placing the potted plants on each step and creating symmetry. This will save space and give one corner of the deck a picturesque look.

4. Add a Daybed

The new Lion King movie is coming up. What if we told you that you could do the movie screening at your house?

This is one of the best DIY décor ideas for deck that not only your kids will love but you will too when you host social events at your house.

Install a day bed on the deck, complete with a mattress, throw pillows and blankets and shawls. Now install a projector in the backyard that faces the deck. Wrap some white fairy lights around it, so that the screen is clearly visible.

Make your kids’ favorite snack and surprise them with this in-home cinema.

5. Floral Wall

Many people want privacy when they are sitting out on the deck. Sheer panels don’t really do the trick and they are so light that they keep flowing.

Here’s what we suggest: a portable garden wall. You can make one yourself by hammering a few wood planks together.

You can easily get the planks from a wood chop shop. Create a base for the wall, so that it can stand on its own. You can now hang potted plants on it. As they will grow, they will wrap around the wall and create privacy for you.

You can add your personal touch to each idea by making a few additions here and there such as an egg chair for a reading nook or a storage bench that doubles as a freezer.
