The sky is the limit when considering what colored curtain to match your gray walls. The gray color in interior design and anywhere else is considered a neutral color.
In definition, a neutral color is defined as hues that appear not to have color. Therefore, they do not clash with the color wheel’s primary and secondary colors; instead, they complement any other color.
This makes finding what curtain color you want to match with a gray wall relatively easy. Here are some popular ideas that you can use as your design inspiration.
Let’s see below some color ideas for curtains that go well with gray walls:
You can never go wrong with white curtains
A design rule that has worked in many interior spaces is, “ When in doubt, go with white.”
This rule works exceptionally well with gray walls. Just like gray, the color white is also a neutral color.
Neutral colors complement each other very well, like any other primary or secondary color.
In this photo example, you can see how the heavy white curtains complement the light gray wall. In my experience, white curtains also pair well if the crown molding and baseboard of your gray wall are painted white, as shown in the photo example.
The contrast of the dark hardwood floors with the light gray wall and white curtains truly makes this room inviting and relaxing to the eye.
Gray curtains on gray walls work as well
Just like with the color white, a neutral gray wall will also compliment a gray curtain even if it is also the same color.
Similar colors compliment one another as long as their shade is different. Like in this design, the walls and curtains are gray, but they complement one another because the gray wall is much lighter than the gray curtains giving it contrast.
You can achieve this design by making your curtains lighter or darker than your gray walls or using a curtain fabric with many textures or weave patterns.
Matching the same color of your wall and curtain gives the room that continuous look that makes any space look much bigger than it is.
As you can see in this design, a gray-on-gray wall and curtain are partnered well with a white painted ceiling.
Partner blue curtains on light gray walls for that classic look
|
Blue and gray has been a classic design that has worked for many years. It is a classic look because the contrast of the light gray wall and heavy dark blue curtains contrast each other so perfectly, as you can see in the photo.
When partnering a light gray wall with a blue curtain, it is always good to remember to go for a dark rich blue hue.
This gives the wall and curtain a beautiful contrast that is very playful to the eyes. When using this as a design inspiration, ensure your space is exceptionally well lit, such as huge windows or french doors, as this is one factor it needs to make it look good.
Naturally stained hardwood floors will also complement your blue curtains and light gray walls, giving it that relaxing and beachside interior feel.
Green velvet curtains on a gray wall give a luxurious feel
|
If you are going for a luxurious interior feel, green curtains on a gray wall might just be what you are looking for.
The gray wall complements the dark forest green velvet curtain exceptionally well. When choosing a green curtain to match a gray wall, in my experience, it is best to go for a rich, full color of green.
This will give a beautiful contrast to the room. A white crown molding and ceiling will pair well with this green velvet curtain.
This color scheme is perfect for room furniture with a lot of brass and copper, as seen in the photo. This completes that modern art deco interior look that just definitely screams luxury.
Black curtains go well with a light gray wall
Black, just like white and gray, is also a neutral color, which means it will complement a gray wall. However, it can be tricky to use black curtains, unlike white curtains.
When using a black curtain, several factors can make or break a room’s interior. First, using a black curtain on a gray wall, the wall needs to be painted light gray, as you can see.
This gives the wall and curtain contrast and prevents the space from looking dark and heavy. It is also a good idea to paint your crown molding and baseboards white to prevent the room from looking dark.
The color trio of white, gray, and black, as you can see, must be used together to have perfect interior harmony.
Also, when using a black curtain, it is best to have no other black furniture or textile in the room, such as lounges, sofas, or area rugs.
As you can see in this design, they opted for a gray chair and multiple natural wood sources, such as the legs. This prevents the black curtains from becoming the focal point of the room.
Go for yellow curtains on gray walls for that bright interior look
|
Another curtain color you can use with gray walls is yellow. Yellow in any interior space will immediately create an inviting and bright room.
This color scheme creates a cheerful and positive environment that can be applied in the living, dining, and family room where people gather most in a home.
When picking a yellow curtain, it is best to go for a richly colored textured curtain as this is the best shade of yellow to match a gray wall, as you can see in the photo.
Make sure that the shade of yellow will always contrast your gray wall. As you can see, the gray wall is lighter than the dark shade of yellow.
Complete the interior space by putting similar yellow textiles, such as a throw pillow, to partner with the yellow curtain and gray wall.
Use teal curtains in a gray bedroom for a relaxing interior
|
A teal curtain is a perfect fit in a gray walled bedroom. You should use a creamy or pastel teal color for your curtains to keep your bedroom from feeling heavy compared to heavy dark drapes.
This color scheme compliments one another well and gives that relaxing beachside feel, especially if your bedroom furniture has a lot of natural wood, such as in this design photo.
Teal-colored curtains not only match a gray wall but are a perfect match to any hardwood floor. With this curtain and wall combination, you will truly feel like you are on a beachside vacation.
