We all grew up watching 007 movies and every time Pierce Brosnan opened a shelf to reveal a secret room, we wished having it in our house too. There’s something really cloak and dagger about a secret room or a passageway that makes you feel… what is that word we are looking for? … Giddy.
As a mom, you can escape your kids for some “me” time as a dad, you can escape “work pressure” and as a kid… you don’t really need an excuse now do you.
The following secret room ideas are for people of all ages. We have come up with these designs, keeping in mind the 007 theme.
They are not only flashy, but also practical. You can easily get some renovation done on your house to get these secret rooms.
The Cute Passageway That Connects to the Kids’ Rooms
If you have an active 5-year-old, then you know how difficult it can be to keep them occupied. This secret room design is quite easy to achieve. Think of it as a mini door for your kid. You can keep the original room door and get this small one on the side.
A built-in shelf will come quite in handy here but if you don’t have that, then a standalone shelf will do. The secret door will be the bottom cupboard of the shelf, which will lead to a secret passage through the walls and into your kid’s room. The door on the other side can be hidden in the same manner by disguising it with a bookshelf.
With the built-in shelf, you only need to install a press open door switch. This way, the bottom half of the shelf will look like the wall. For the standalone shelf, you can make it look like a simple cupboard but when the door is open, there’s a sliding partition inside which leads to the other room.
Sound’s exciting and easily doable right?
The Wardrobe to Narnia
You have probably read “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” to your kids. Why not take inspiration from this story and create a heavenly nook for yourself? It all started with a secret passageway from inside the wardrobe that led to the magical land of Narnia.
This hidden room idea is basically a small getaway. Older houses with back wall space can easily create this. The back of the wardrobe will have a sliding door that will lead to another door, which, when opened, will reveal the secret room.
There are plenty of ways you can decorate this room such as with a daybed for relaxing, a comfortable chair, and a bookshelf for a reading session.
If it feels too taxing for you to get the furniture inside the secret room, then we suggest creating a pillow haven with some throw blankets. Mount a TV on the wall and get some speakers. If you can put in the extra hours, get the room sound proofed.
The Hidden Reading Nook
The hidden reading nook is a small cozy seating with overhead lights that allow you to read in peace. Get creative with this small space and install and food tray, prop up a tablet, and relax with your favorite book in hand.
This secret room entrance idea is one of the most basic ones that we often see in movie — a simple shelf that opens and reveals the reading nook. You can make the entrance a little more exciting by rigging a book with the lock’s mechanism, so that when you pull it out, the door opens.
The Indoor Tree House
Who doesn’t like a tree house? Well, the one outside tends to be less comfortable. So, we decided to bring the tree house indoors. This hidden room idea is pretty amazing, and we are sure that your kids will love it. Just like the reading nook idea we created for adults, this one is for kids.
You know those empty cupboards near the ceiling that you rarely use? Well, it’s time to spruce them and do something really cool with them.
With two cupboards side by side, you can carve out a hole in the middle and install a sliding door in the space. This way, there are two secret rooms for your kids.
Furnish the space with basics such as throw pillows and a quilt. You are probably wondering how your kids will reach the cupboard, right? Well, get one of those knot climbing ropes and hang it on the door in such a way that when the door opens, the rope falls down.
As for opening the door, the best thing to do is to install an electronic lock. This way, the secret room will be indeed a “secret.”
So how do these secret room designs sound to you? Some of them will require quite a lot for work, but the end result will be pretty amazing. Plus, the look on your kids’ face when you will show them the secret room will be priceless. If you are looking for more room ideas, then visit Epic Home Ideas.
