Repairing Your Clogged Sewer Line Without Digging Up Your Entire Yard

Written By Glenn Prescot

Sewer line problems are among the most dreaded of many homeowners. Aside from being very costly and disruptive, it often entails tearing up the lawn and digging up driveways to access the pipes that run beneath them; leaving a mess of your outdoor landscaping in the process.

If you’re stressing out about the significant damage that a looming sewer line repair may do to your beautiful yard, there is another option that you may or may not have heard of.

For those who wish to bypass the backhoe, trenchless (no dig) sewer repair is the perfect solution.

The trenchless method has been around and available for residential homes for over a decade now. But though it is not new at all, many homeowners are just discovering it.

This may be because they have been too comfortable with the traditional means of sewer line repair or they lack research and information on alternative methods.

Trenchless Sewer Line Repair

Trenchless sewer line repair has saved many people from the pain and heartache of seeing their beautiful yards turned upside down, and it can do the same for you too! It is an effective and efficient way of addressing your sewer problems and restoring your pipes to mint working condition without tearing up your lawn.

The trenchless method is ideal for installing larger and better water lines to your house or patching up a variety of sewer line issues such as burst pipes, improperly installed sewer lines, pipes that cracked due to freezing and thawing, and damaged piping that lay underneath landscaping, driveways, and garages.

Right now, there are two types of trenchless sewer line replacement techniques that are getting more popular among home homeowners: pipe lining and pipe bursting.

Pipe Relining

Pipe relining, also called “cured in place pipe,” makes use of a resin-coated flexible tube that is pulled and inflated into the damaged pipe.

First, a technician inserts a self-leveling camera into the pipe for inspection and measurements. As the video camera travels the length of the pipe, the technician also takes note of any cracks or blockages to prepare for the next step in the process. After the video inspection, the pipe is blasted with a hydro jet or cleaned mechanically to rid it of any dirt or debris.

When the old pipe is finally clear of obstructions, an epoxy-saturated felt tube is inserted into the damaged pipe, then pressed and heated into place with an inflating bladder. The tube cures and solidifies in an hour, creating a pipe within a pipe.

Pipe Bursting

Pipe bursting, also known as pipe splitting, involves fracturing and displacing the damaged pipe outward as a new one is pulled through it.

This method still entails a bit of digging, although it’s far less destructive to your lawn and backyard landscape than traditional sewer repair. In fact, it’s more accurate to call pipe bursting a “semi-trenchless” technique because it requires holes to be dug on both ends of the lateral for access.

The broken sewer line serves as the guide for the bursting system’s rod (where the bursting blades, an expander, and the new pipe are attached) which is pulled through the existing pipe, breaking it up and replacing it with a new one.

On instances where pipe lining is not the most suitable solution because the lateral has joints or the line has already collapsed, pipe bursting is the next best alternative.

The Benefits of Non-Invasive Sewer Line Repair and Replacement

Both pipe lining and pipe bursting are long-lasting options for fixing and replacing old and faulty sewer lines. Although trenchless sewer repair techniques are more costly upfront than their traditional counterpart, they prove to be the wiser and more practical choice in the long run.

Traditional trenching comes with so many other expenses and encumbrances aside from the repair. You’ll have to spend more money on redoing your landscaping and restoring sidewalks and public areas that were in the way of the excavation, which can rack up to tens of thousands of dollars.

Trenchless sewer repairs, on the other hand, usually take less than a day with minimal inconvenience to your daily routine and lifestyle. The less intrusive methodology keeps your outdoor space intact, thus saving you from tons of extra expenses and unwanted hassles.

Sewer line issues can become more severe and more expensive if they’re not given immediate attention. If you’re experiencing sewer problems lately, don’t waste time! Get in touch with a trusted plumbing company and inquire about their trenchless sewer line repair and replacement services right away.
