One of the best things about decorating your home is the freedom to create an artistic expression in your mind and then bring your vision to life piece by piece.

Often, we tend to take inspiration from places and times that we can relate to or admire. And since history repeats itself, it’s only right that the essence of the mid-century is amongst some of the most popular preferences for recreation.

If you’d like to give your space this same type of look, keep reading to check out the top mid century modern decor tips.

Get Colors Right

The mid century modern movement can be easily recognized through certain color schemes and hues. For instance, the vibrancy of deep shades of yellow, red and green are the focus versus more soft pastel colors.

Often, the colors are cool tones that give a warm feeling to any room.

Favor Wooden Pieces

Many people have forgotten the refreshing look that wood brings to a room. The furniture industry currently sells a lot of manufactured wooden pieces instead of actual wood.

You may have to spend a little more to get authentic wooden furniture for your mid century modern home. Also, check out some of the local antique and vintage shops to find some hidden gems. It could make all the difference when it comes to creating the right feel.

Add Mirrors

Here’s a quick and practical addition you can make to any room to enhance the mid century modern vibe. But not just any mirror—start with looking for ones with gold or silver frames. It would be a plus to add mirrors with quirky yet symmetrical shapes.

Look for Clean Symmetry

Speaking of symmetry, this is definitely an element to remember and include in your mid century modern decor. A lot of the pieces made by designers included simple yet powerful symmetrical outlines.

Consider mixing the polygon shapes (octagons, irregular hexagons, etc.) with some of the more rounded ones (circles, ovals, etc.) around the room.

Straightforward Seating

The thing about the sofas and chairs of the mid century modern movement is that they’re very simple and functional yet comfortable. The combination of these factors makes them great additions to any home.

A lot of the time, you will find the sofas are a little lower with short, thin (sometimes angled) legs. You may also find L-shaped couches, which are perfect for larger families to lounge, and comfy, deep-set accent chairs.

There is a good variety of seating options from this era. Jamie Fielden from SW James (https://www.swjames.com/) says that a tan or camel colored Chesterfield makes a perfect addition to any mid-century themed living room.
