The Pros and Cons of Bamboo Flooring for your House

Written By Glenn Prescot

Have you been planning to move into a new house, or perhaps, revamp the one you are currently living in? Well, in both cases you need to embellish every nook and corner of the house. And let’s be honest, floors are the most difficult one. Which flooring type should I go for? Should I choose tiles or wooden flooring? Pine wood flooring? Or rugs, maybe?

Pros and cons of bamboo floorig

Eh, you need to install some flooring before adorning the floor with a rug!

We know, choosing one of the best material from the plethora of flooring options can be very tough.

How are we supposed to choose one, all are beautiful!

And as a layperson, we don’t know the pros and cons of these flooring materials.

But hey, we, at Epic Home Ideas, are here to help you build a beautiful home. We write about everything that relates to building a home. But, as this article is talking about floors, you can check out articles on various flooring materials like travertine tiles, hickory flooring, pine wood flooring etc.

And guess what this article is talking about? Bamboo Flooring!

A house with bamboo flooring

Bamboo is quite similar to a regular hardwood, and comes with a set of amazing benefits. People widely use it in America and South Asia for its qualities like being sturdy and eco-friendly (just like Tigerwood).

We’re sure, like all the flooring options, you might want to know the pros and cons of bamboo flooring as well. So, let’s dive into its pros and cons.

Advantages of Bamboo Flooring

Environment Friendly

Unlike traditional hardwood, bamboo is an eco-friendly and renewable option. As bamboos are not wood but grasses, they grow and mature faster than trees supplying hardwood.

It hardly takes 5 to 7 years to mature and can be harvested without replanting the root system. Whereas, the trees that supply hardwood take around 20 to 120 years to mature.

Pest Repellent

Bamboos come with natural pests, which helps them to repel insects. Hence, installing bamboo flooring will keep your home safe from insects like bugs and termites.

A Stylish Flooring Option

Bamboo flooring helps you create a style statement

People who want their homes to look elegant and chic, bamboo flooring is one of the best options for you. Even though it is similar to hardwood, it has its own uniqueness and will lend a different kind of style to your home. Be ready to create a style statement once you have installed bamboo flooring for your house.

Easy to Maintain

Bamboo floorings are easy to maintain. Sweeping and vacuuming the floor removes all the dust and debris stuck between the gaps.

However, mopping the floor will make the house look cleaner. Hence, you can mop the floor occasionally with a mild soap. But make sure that you squeeze off the excessive water from the mop.

Pocket Friendly

Bamboo floorings are sold at affordable prices as they are easily available in the market. Also, as I said before, traditional hardwood supplying trees take 20 to 120 years to mature, and bamboo takes just 5 to 7 years, which is again the reason why bamboo is easily available for us. And anything that’s easily available is cost effective!

You can get bamboo flooring at 3$ to 6$ per sq. ft. Isn’t that quite affordable?

Variety

Bamboo flooring comes in different shades

An added benefit about this chic flooring material is that it is available in different shades. Though the natural color of bamboo is light golden, you can go for the carbonized bamboo in case you want to give a darker shade to the floor.

Disadvantages of Bamboo Flooring

Isn’t Scratch Proof

Scratches on bamboo flooring

Like any hardwood, bamboo too is prone to scratches and dents. Furniture, pointy heels and sharp objects can damage the surface of the flooring.

However, some precautions can be taken, you can place your furniture on area rugs to prevent scratches. These rugs not only prevent your floor but also give your house a sophisticated look.

Can Turn Soft

If you don’t allow bamboos to mature and harden before harvesting, it might turn softer with time. While flooring looks great in the beginning, it is non-durable. Go for un-carbonized and strand-woven bamboo flooring instead of darker bamboos.

So, those were few pros and cons of bamboo flooring. But which flooring material to go for is completely on you. Every material has its own pros and cons, and based on your needs, you need to choose the right material for you.

Have a pet around? Then maybe scratches on the floor can be a problem!

Are you an environment freak? Well, bamboos are perfect for you!

Looking for an option that’s easy on pockets? Again, bamboos are for you!

So, based on your needs and requirements, choose the right material.
