Be strategic

Renovating your home with a child on the way, or when you already have kids, needs to be done strategically.

If possible, try to do as many renovations at once, so you don’t have to go through the process again in the future, and be tactical about them.

Remember, you will probably have to live in that house while the renovations are underway. Kitchen and bathroom renovations can be the biggest disturbance to your daily life, and try to have at least one liveable room at all times.

Clean up space

Before renovations start, you should clean up your space as much as possible, pack everything, and throw out things you don’t need.

This will give you more space to work with and will save you time when it’s time to clean everything up after the renovations.

Label the boxes so you know where your stuff is if you need it at any given time. If you have to pack up toys, explain to your kids why it is necessary. Allow them to keep at least one toy for comfort.

Sturdy furniture

If you are buying new or replacing furniture, go for the quality and sturdy ones. Investing in quality pieces like the couch, table, and chairs means those pieces will last a lot longer and they can survive family life.

It’s best to buy new furniture, quality-wise and you also can get a warranty. Sofas should be sturdy, preferably with washable fabric and cushions.

We all know that something will be spilled on at least once. Dinner table and chairs are used all the time for various purposes, so they should also be durable and sturdy.

Storage

Storage is what a family always needs. Kids come with a lot of clutter – toys, clothes, cribs, chairs, etc. You will need a lot of storage if you want to keep your house tidy.

Besides the regular storage cabinets and closets, you can also bring in some pieces that can serve as decoration or additional furniture.

Ottomans with storage space are perfect for living rooms, bedrooms and nurseries.  They are usually upholstered and have a lid so you can easily put away toys or even clothes. They serve as additional seating, and you can move them if you need floor space.

Flooring

Floors go through a lot of stress and wear over the years, especially for a family with kids. You will need a sturdy floor that can easily be cleaned without special treatment.

Hardwood floors are a good option, as they are easy to clean and have a timeless style. Rugs and carpets can protect any flooring you have in the house. If you choose the carpet route, it’s always good to call up carpet installers for a consultation on the best option for you.

Bathrooms

Bathrooms are the most important rooms in a house. If you have multiple bathrooms, and you plan to have your child use a separate one from yours, there are a few renovations to consider.

The key is to use high-quality and long-lasting materials. Pick durable tiles, preferable ones with textures, as they are less slippery when wet.

Countertops should also be made from durable material, and in normal height, because the kids will grow up. A non-slip stool and bathmat will further provide safety for the youngsters.

You can do many small and big upgrades to your home and make it kid-friendly. The key is to be strategic and plan to details how the renovations will go. Investing in quality furniture will give you peace of mind for later.
