Interior Design: Home Design Rules You Can Definitely Break

If you have never possessed a single strain of decorating abilities in your arsenal or are simply a novice at executing design ideas, it can be rather easy to be convinced and swayed by some interior design edicts as proposed by designers.

However, the truth is, while their design rules are traditionally considered beautiful, albeit rigid, they can also be obsolete.

Remember, just as time passes and design concepts evolve, so do the rules. Sure, they may be parroted by almost every influential home interior designer you might know but this is no reason for you to staunchly abide by them.

Furthermore, as these design concepts are mostly traditional in nature, there is a likely chance that they would be considered irrelevant and obsolete by today’s standards.

Today, contemporary and modern design advocates that design must also incorporate function. In this regard, there is no absolute need for your living room furniture to match and not every rule in the design rulebook should be followed. So, if you are looking to redesign your bgc condo for sale for example, here are some of the rules you can definitely break:

Table of Contents

  • You do not have to match your metals
  • Dressers are NOT for bedrooms only
  • You do not have to hang your art
  • There is no need to match everything
  • Proportion and scale do not necessarily have to dictate design

You do not have to match your metals

Just because your faucet fixture in your bathroom sink is silver embossed, it does not mean that the rest of your accents and fixtures have to be universally in the same finish.

Similarly, just because the handles of your cupboards are of a particular metal color, it does not mean you have to deck your entire kitchen entirely in that color of metal. There is no reason for you to be scared of mixing metals. In fact, stainless steel appliances and brass fixtures go really well together. Experiment and see for yourself what combinations you can come up with.

Dressers are NOT for bedrooms only

People seem to hold on to this erroneous belief that dressers belong in bedrooms exclusively. However, dressers do make excellent items for storage. If you want to add a bit of elegance and storage options to a room, utilize a dresser. Not only are the great for style, they are practical as well.

You do not have to hang your art

If you are a self-confessed art collector and connoisseur, you cannot possibly expect to use every available wall space in your house for art solely.

Not only will you be effectively turning your walls into something akin to visual noise, but it would look tacky as well. Instead of hanging everything, try leaning it on a wall or perhaps layering it on a console. It looks a bit unconventional but the overall effect is very modern, chic and sophisticated.

There is no need to match everything

living room

If you are skeptical about breaking rules or at least hesitant in doing so, start with the biggest and possibly the easiest rule you can break.

The reality is you do not have to match everything. In fact, matching all of your décor and furniture would only make your interiors look dull, predictable and boring.

It is precisely the juxtaposition of various aspects and elements that would make a room come to life so make what of that what you will. Mix and match to your heart’s content and incorporate personal details every now and then.

Proportion and scale do not necessarily have to dictate design

While this rule was made for practical reasons, there are ways that breaking this very rule could open up a realm of possibilities.

furniture

Oversized furniture in a diminutive room can potentially have a startlingly fabulous effect. You might not easily see it, but a mixture of different furniture in varying shapes and sizes can truly enliven a room. So, even if your space calls for rather small furniture set ups switch it up a bit and consider incorporating huge furniture instead.
