Written By Glenn Prescot

The modern style of interior decorating is a sought-after look and for good reason. A modern look creates a seamless look that also works well as a neutral base for holiday decorating.

Take Inventory

The first tip for creating a modern look on a budget is to take inventory of the home decor items you already have. This means digging into the dreaded overflowing closet and looking for pieces that have the potential to fit in with a modern look.

If you have decor pieces that you think would be great for a modern look, set them aside and think about where you may want to place them. If you have a few items that you would like to use but you don’t think that they fit the theme, place them in another pile and think about anyways you could transform them to fit a modern theme.

A few easy strategies to transform home decor pieces you already have include painting them to change them to a more neutral color (common with a modern theme) or upcycling it to a new piece entirely. These are both great strategies to save you money when updating your home.

Little Change Can Make a Big Difference

If you take one thing away from this article, let it be that little changes can make a big difference when you choose to create a modern look.

If one of the rooms you would like to make more modern is the bedroom, you can easily do this by changing the bedding that you have. Since the bed is often the focal point of the room, this is an inexpensive way to change the entire feel of the room!

When going with a modern look, grey is an optimal choice for a bedding set. Grey goes with most colors effortlessly and can create a sense of calming wherever it is placed. The color grey also creates a clean look that goes perfectly with the modern theme.

Bedding isn’t the only way to bring a modern feel to the bedroom. One tip that you may not have thought of is keeping the floor empty and clean. When you think modern, you think clean and simple. If your bedroom is full of stuff cluttering the floor, you are not likely to achieve a modern look!

Another tip for a modern bedroom would include adding some life to the room with plants. If plants aren’t your thing, you could opt for some faux greenery. Whether you choose a potted or hanging plant, it should add a modern and lively feel to the room.

Add Crown Molding

If you do not already have crown molding in your home, this is a simple way to add an element of modern-ness to any room in your home. Crown molding serves as a connection between the floor and the ceiling to give your home a modern finished look.

Another perk of crown molding is that you can customize the color to the color scheme that you have in a certain room of your home. White is the traditional color of crown molding and it creates a clean, modern look in any room.

If you are wanting to add crown molding to your entire home, try starting with one room and finishing it before you move to the next. Not only will this be less stressful, but it will also help your budget!

Change the Lighting

If you have had the same lights in your home for a while, it may be time for a modern upgrade. The good news is that there are a lot of great modern lighting options for those who are shopping on a budget, you just need to know where to look!

A few great places to look for unique modern lighting features include thrift shops and flea markets. You can often find designer lighting pieces at these locations for a fraction of the price! If you are up for a little project, you may even find an older lighting feature and fix it up a bit until it fits your modern home theme.

When you think lighting, don’t just think about the main lighting features. Think lamps of all shapes and sizes too! Adding a lamp can help to change the feel of a room. Keep in mind your color scheme and modern theme when searching for the perfect lamp.

Ditch the Carpet!

Most modern homes don’t have carpet in every room. This may sound like an expensive change, but it doesn’t have to be! If you are lucky enough to have hardwood underneath your carpet, you can simply rip up the old carpet and reveal a completely new floor!

You’ll want to give the hardwood underneath a little TLC, so you will want to think about this when planning your budget. Just remember the products you purchase to get your “new” floor shining are much cheaper than an entirely new floor!

Whether you choose to accessorize with some items you have shoved in the back of a closet, add a new lighting fixture, or add a new bedding set, your home is sure to have a new and modern feel when you are finished!
