Energy Savings By Using Outdoor Blinds

US Department of Energy Findings

Research from the US Department of Energy corroborates the energy-saving potential of window treatments.

Their study found that insulated cellular shades (also known as honeycomb or cellular shades) reduced overall home energy use by approximately 20%. This substantial reduction underscores the significant impact that appropriate window treatments can have on residential energy consumption.

British Blind and Shutter Association (BBSA)

The British Blind and Shutter Association (BBSA) commissioned research at the Energy House laboratory, which houses a full-scale early 20th century terraced house in an environmental chamber capable of replicating temperatures ranging from -12°C to 30°C. The testing evaluated five types of window treatments on energy-efficient double-glazed windows with the following results:

  • Roller blinds fitted with zip side channels and low-e fabric reduced heat loss by 33%

  • Blockout honeycomb blinds in framed bead fit systems decreased heat loss by 32%

  • Internal plantation shutters lowered heat loss by 28%

  • Roller blinds with fitted side channels reduced heat loss by 22%

  • Standard roller blinds decreased heat loss by 13%

These findings demonstrate that even basic window treatments can provide meaningful energy conservation benefits, while more sophisticated systems can reduce heat transfer by approximately one-third.

Different Types of Outdoor Blinds

Roller Blinds

Straightforward and versatile blinds that roll up and down on a tube mechanism. They’re popular for their clean look, ease of operation, and ability to block sun while maintaining views. Available in various fabrics including sun-filtering and blockout options.

Ziptrack Blinds

Track-guided blinds with a unique “zip” locking system where the fabric edges lock into side channels. This creates a sealed environment that’s windproof and insect-proof. They operate smoothly without gaps or rattling, making them ideal for enclosing outdoor areas.

Café Blinds

Clear or tinted PVC blinds primarily designed for outdoor dining areas. They provide weather protection while maintaining views. Typically featuring a roll-up design with straps or zips, they’re popular for restaurants and home alfresco areas.

Vertical Drop Awnings

Mounted above windows or openings to drop down vertically. Unlike traditional awnings that project outward, these drop straight down to provide shade and privacy. They’re excellent for west-facing areas that receive harsh afternoon sun.

Channel Guided Blinds

Similar to Ziptrack but using a different guiding system where the fabric slides within aluminum channels on both sides. This system provides stability in windy conditions and ensures the blind operates smoothly without swaying.

Wire Guided Blinds

Use tensioned stainless steel wires rather than channels to guide the blind fabric. The wires run through eyelets or loops in the fabric. This minimalist approach is less obtrusive visually while still providing wind stability and maintaining fabric tension.

It’s interesting to know that outdoor blinds are weather-friendly. With the cold season just around the corner, I like what you said that it makes tide protection from the harsh weather. Since I’m looking for the right outdoor treatment to install on my windows this winter, I am hoping to find a provider here in town.

Your point about how weather-friendly outdoor blinds can make your home become was really interesting to read. Summer season is fast approaching our area, and I would like to do all I can to prevent our air conditioning unit from being overworked as it tries to keep us all cool. If I can find a place that installs outdoor blinds, I’ll be sure to hire them before the summer hits.
