How To Keep Your Lawn A Healthy Shade Of Green

Written By Glenn Prescot

Keeping your lawn a healthy and evenly-distributed shade of green, especially in the summer can be a difficult task. Luckily, there are a few things you can do to make sure your lawn stays luscious all year long, no matter how capricious and extreme the weather may be.

Consistency Is Key

Watering the lawn efficiently is a vital step towards ensuring your lawn stays green, thick, and healthy. Efficient watering, however, does not mean drowning or being too sparse, but rather, finding the middle ground your lawn needs.

There must be a balance between the two to ensure the root systems are healthy and providing green blades in return. Over-watering can create a great deal of problems and can be costly to repair, especially for lawns in Toronto and other parts of Southern Ontario, where there is a good deal of rainfall throughout the year.

The best amount of water for your lawn, during the high heat of summer, is 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week; it shouldn’t require any more than that. It’s best to provide this water early in the day, before the sun rises up, allowing the water to reach all of the roots before being evaporated by the heat of the sun. This way the plant can hold onto that water longer.

Take Advantage Of Technology

A sprinkler or automated watering system is another perfect way to keep your lawn green. A sprinkler will automatically turn on, provide the correct amount of water needed for your lawn, and then shut off without any manual labor required.

If you sleep regularly until after the sun has risen, you are probably not able to maintain your property with early morning watering. A sprinkler will solve that issue for you and, with irrigation technology rapidly improving each year, there’s no need to worry about your system breaking down – so long as you maintain it properly whenever you can.

Maintain Your Irrigation System

However, if you have a system installed and are in need of sprinkler repairs this summer – particularly in the Toronto, Ontario area – there are many businesses available to get your sprinkler set up and maintained, which you should do as soon as you notice discrepancies in its ability to function; if a part of the system breaks down, it can very easily lead to over- or under-watering, and should thus be addressed post-haste, if your lawn is to maintain its healthy glow. Irrigation systems are also useful in gardens with planters, especially when you have many of them.

Keep Track Of Weather And Other Contingencies

An irrigation watering system, moreover, will not only save you the time needed to manually water your lawn, but it will also save you a great deal of money – that is, if it is properly tended to. You won’t risk overwatering the lawn and subsequently causing root bacteria to grow and spread. While you save money and time, you also save on water. If your lawn is mostly constructed of sod, you will want to water it two times a day, and maybe even three times a day depending on how hot the weather is. Your roots need to get established and need the water to begin growing blades of grass.

Do keep in mind that while you are nurturing your lawn and properly watering it, it’s beneficial to reduce the traffic flow on it; keep the environment calm and try your best not to stomp across your property. Grass, like any other plant, can experience stress, and if it is frequently stepped on and ran over it will wither, become discoloured, and ultimately die. In any case, if you give your lawn some time and patience, you should see a significant turnaround in its lushness.
