Why You Need Deck Drains for Your Backyard Pool

Written By Glenn Prescot

After investing in a pool, it might be tempting to leave out deck drains in order to save some money, but that could be a serious mistake that ends up costing you in the long run.

Here is a look at just a few of the reasons why deck drains are so important and some of the most popular types of drains for residential swimming pools.

Benefits of Deck Drains

Without a good drainage system around your pool, a minor accident could quickly result in thousands of dollars in damage.

These systems are going to protect the deck, your yards, the hardscape, and your home’s foundation. A drainage system is also going to make it much safer to lounge around your pool. You won’t have to worry about standing water that attracts mosquitoes, rodents, and other unwanted pests.

Metal or Plastic?

The first choice that you will need to make when buying deck drains is what type of material you would like to use.

For many years, PVC drains were the most popular option, but that type of plastic can eventually become warped or cracked.

If you are on the hunt for long-lasting deck drains, then you should consider picking up metal channels and grating from a company like Hydro Construction Products. Those deck drains should last for decades with the proper maintenance, and they can often be installed in a matter of hours.

Appearance

Luckily, there are now many different types of deck drains to choose from, and you are sure to find a style that you like as long as you do a little bit of research.

Most metal and plastic drains can easily be painted, but you need to be sure that the paint is designed to withstand moisture and direct sunlight. You can also choose different grate sizes and designs depending on what type of atmosphere you are trying to create.

Cleaning Your Deck Drains

As a general rule, homeowners should always go with deck drains that have removable covers. The grates will probably catch most of the debris, but the channels might still collect some mud and leaves over the years. With a removable cover, you will easily be able to reach inside the channel and remove that debris.

Once your pool has been built and all of the safety features are in place, you might want to take a fresh look at your home insurance. Most basic home policies don’t include pool damage, and you should consider expanding your insurance so that your pool and deck are fully covered.
