4 Ways to Add Style to Your Swimming Pool Area

Written By Glenn Prescot

Though swimming pools are usually considered the height of class and relatively expensive, getting a pool nowadays is not as unaffordable as it may seem. In fact, many middle-class families are able to build a pool for a reasonable amount of money, and even add some style and elegance to it on a budget.

But, whether you’ve got a small, budget pool, or a large architectural masterpiece, there comes a time when the old decorations just aren’t doing it.

And that’s where we come in – read our little article, and you’ll surely get some neat ideas to spruce up your swimming area for the next season. Let’s get to it!

Table of Contents

  • 1.  Select the Right Materials for the Deck
  • 2.  Get Some Extra Features
  • 3. Let Nature In
  • 4. Spice Up With Lighting
  • Conclusion

1.  Select the Right Materials for the Deck

Whether you’re working an above-ground or in-ground pool choosing the right pool deck materials is crucial. There are many materials in circulation, and each has its own benefits and shortcomings, so the choice isn’t that clear-cut. However, once you’ve considered the climate you’re living in, the architectural design of your house and the budget you’re working with, the choice becomes much easier.

On that note, some of the most common materials for a deck are concrete, tiles, wood and paving stones. Concrete, while the most wide-spread, easiest to maintain and budget-friendly while also being diverse, can get heated quickly in the warm sun, and tends to get slippery if it doesn’t have a textured finish.

Tiles have similar downsides, but they’re also very easy to maintain and can be very stylish and easy to fit into the over-arching style of your home.

Paving stones are also very elegant and natural-looking, but they can be expensive to install. Wood is the most natural and the most elegant, but it requires a great deal of maintenance throughout its service life.

2.  Get Some Extra Features

Naturally, you’re not going to leave your pool looking like a water-filled hole in the ground with a nice finish – you’re going to add some features.

When adding those features, people first think of adding some furniture. One of the most popular extras is making the poolside into a dining area, complete with a family-sized dining table or a table for two, perfect for relaxing family dinners or romantic dinners away from the summer heat.

Another popular feature in places with lots of sun or lots of precipitation is a pergola. If you’re thinking about hiding your deck chairs from the scorching heat or having someplace to chill with family and friends who’ve come to check out your new pool, you can check out Pioneer Shade structures for some high-quality and stylish pergolas and poolside shades – not only will they work great with your poolside entertainment/chill area, but they’re high-functional and affordable as well!

3. Let Nature In

Do you know what’s a great place to put your pool in? The garden! If you’ve got the money and space, consider building a garden around your pool.

The garden will definitely add to the freshness that the pool exudes, along with making the whole composition come together as a piece of wild, untamed nature.

In fact, natural swimming pools (sometimes called swimming ponds) are not only functional as swimming and relaxation pools, but they’re also very clean and eco-friendly, as the whole concept of such ponds is that the water is cleaned through natural means, such as filtering it through rocks and gravel and using naturally-occurring bacteria.

In addition to being incredibly stylish, gardens are functional too. Plants, especially trees, serve as barriers in case the pool spills over.

The roots of trees absorb the water in such a case, meaning the water won’t cause too much property damage to your or your neighbours in the case of the pool overflowing during high precipitation events.

4. Spice Up With Lighting

Perhaps the quickest way of spicing up your poolside area is to add some pool lighting. Whether adding it on the deck or into the pool itself, the correct lighting will reinforce the atmosphere of rest and relaxation after a long, hot day.

Lighting is perfect for evening parties and events and set a very romantic mood for night-time dips and late-evening dinners.

As for the lights themselves, you can go with a wide variety of lighting. In-pool lights will provide enough vision for midnight dips, while some tiki torches add to the smoothness of the whole composition.

Finally, if you’re feeling particularly frisky, try installing some fire pits, either on the side of the pool or in the seating area, combined with in-pool lights for that extra feeling of contemporary style and elegance.

Conclusion

And with that, we’ll give the tips a rest and let you process them. These are just some suggestions, and there are certainly more out there, so feel free to combine the tips we provided you with other tips and tricks you may have stumbled upon while researching for the best combination of style, elegance and functionality for your pool.
