Tech Upgrades to Improve Your Work From Home Office

Working from home is the new normal. Some companies, such as Airbnb, have already confirmed that employees can work from home forever.

In most cases, people choose to work from the couch when they do not have a study room.

It may feel comfortable the first few days you work on the couch, but you need a more ergonomic working space.

Here are simple upgrades to get your working space ready.

Table of Contents

  • Get an Ergonomic Desk and Chair
  • Get Soft Light for Your Work Desk
  • Set the Cables and Charging Adapters Right
  • Organize Your Desk
  • Speakers and Video Lighting
  • Update Your Computer

Get an Ergonomic Desk and Chair

If you have to crane over your neck when you are working or slump over at your desk, then your working space is not healthy for you.

Worse yet, if you work from your couch, you need a desk and chair. Slumping over can cause lower back, neck, and shoulder pain.

You can ignore the pain for a while, but it exacerbates and finally starts affecting your work.

Start by designating a room or a corner of a room to work as your office and then get a good desk.

When working, your back should be straight and your eyes at the same level as the top of the computer screen.

Get Soft Light for Your Work Desk

The good thing about remote work is that you can do it at any time. If you always work at night, getting a soft desk lamp will protect your eyes and help illuminate your workspace for efficiency.

The soft glow of such a light gives your home office a warm and cozy feeling, making the space less stressful.

Open the blinds to the home office during the day to allow in natural light, which has a positive effect on your mental health.

If the screen produces more light than the lights in your office, your eyes will strain, and this can result in fatigue and headaches.

Set the Cables and Charging Adapters Right

Your WFH office needs to be fully functional. You will need a reliable internet connection, charging ports, and several other cables to make your work efficient.

You need to first pick the right cables for your devices. For instance, you can make the switch from QSFP28 to SFP28 internet cables since you only use the cables alone.

You also need to ensure that whatever cables you choose can power your devices and are durable enough.

If you have several cables, they can clutter your desk. As such, get a way to organize these cables so that your desk looks clean at all times.

Organize Your Desk

An organized desk is good for your mental stability while at work. More often, people are not able to separate their home and work life and leave everything scattered on the desk since no one is watching.

However, you need to create some form of organization. Get organizers for your pens and notebooks.

Bins and baskets help you keep your desk clean so that you can get right into the job the next morning when you wake up.

Speakers and Video Lighting

You will probably be on video calls for the best part of your WFH days. As such, you need to get quality headphones, speakers, and lighting.

If you use a separate webcam or camera, you also need to get one that offers clear videos. The speakers are for when you do not want to wear headphones all day.

You can use them to listen to the audio for work and sometimes for entertainment.

The headphones with a microphone come in handy during video meetings that you will attend most of the days.

You can also get a USB microphone. For the videos, ensure that you have enough lighting. Natural lighting is the best, but if your office is not well-lit, you should consider getting good lighting.

Update Your Computer

The home office computer may not be up to date if you do not work from home a lot. You need a fast computer with the latest software for efficient working.

You should also get a comfortable wireless keyboard and an advanced wireless mouse to further make your work easier. Ensure you have the necessary programs needed for your work.

Ensure you have other office essentials, such as Wi-Fi routers, whiteboard, laptop stand, desk mat, and a couple of other desk accessories. You can also add a plant in your office and wall art to make the place lively.
