Nowadays, modern apartments and houses are often built with low ceilings, which can be a problem if your space is small. It can create an atmosphere of crowdedness and uneasiness, and make you feel constrained and cramped.

Luckily, there are several decorative solutions that can help you create an illusion of spaciousness and make your ceiling seem higher.

So here is what we’ll be discussing in the article below:

Table of Contents

  • The importance of the right furniture
  • The effects of lighting
  •  The power of color
  • Stripes for the wow effect
  • Elevated artwork

The importance of the right furniture

low profile furniture

When choosing your furniture, don’t focus solely on the aesthetic appeal and style. It’s important that you choose the furniture that will fit your space. Thus, you should opt for low profile furniture to create an impression of distance between the pieces and the ceiling. Consequently, your room will seem more spacious and airy. Avoid items that are taller than average-sized pieces because they will make the ceiling look even lower.

The effects of lighting

Lighting is a powerful decorative tool that can completely transform a space if used appropriately. There are several lighting options that are appropriate for low ceilings. You can opt for simple, yet elegant downlights that won’t take up too much space, yet they will make your room seem wider and more spacious. Another great solution is going with the wall lighting fixtures like sconces to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere in your home.

 The power of color

Paint is another important decorative element that can create an illusion of spaciousness in smaller areas. If your ceilings are flat, then you can paint them in the same color like the walls and blur the boundary between the two. An even better solution is painting your ceiling in white because it will reflect light and create an illusion of vastness and spaciousness. You will achieve even better results if you have dark colored floors.

If you have crown moulding or you’re planning to install it, then don’t opt for a design that is too wide. When painting the crown moulding and the ceiling, choose hues that aren’t too much in contrast because this will draw a sharp boundary between the two, making your ceiling seem even lower.

Stripes for the wow effect

Not only will stripes make your ceiling seem higher, but they will also bring a sense of novelty into your home. Even if you don’t like stripes very much, you should find a design to your taste and incorporate them anyway.

You can use striped wallpapers or paint them yourself – they will completely transform your space and elevate the décor. Stripes are one of your greatest allies when it comes to low ceilings because they will draw your gaze upwards, rather than sideways. If you don’t want to paint all of your walls with stripes, you can have one accent wall, and then use a striped-design for furniture. Make no mistake, stripes will give your living space a unique look.

Elevated artwork

Apart from elevating your home décor, artwork can also help you create an illusion of having a higher ceiling. There are several aspects to keep in mind when choosing and hanging artwork in a room with a low ceiling. You should use vertically framed pictures and paintings to make the walls seem taller. When hanging them, you should place them a bit closer to the ceiling, which will draw your look upwards. You should also choose pieces with vertical lines, such as abstracts or trees.

If your set consists of two paintings, you should stack them vertically to create an illusion of height. As for groups of paintings or pictures, you can place them horizontally as long as the majority of them is vertically framed. In addition, you should have a center that draws the eye upwards.

The power of interior design can help you create an illusion of spaciousness and height in small spaces. Make sure to avoid using any items that hang from the ceiling, such as an over-sized chandelier or ceiling fan. In addition, don’t use dark hues for your ceiling and eliminate clutter from your living space.
