How to Make Sure the Practical Parts of Your Remodel Are Beautiful

Written By Glenn Prescot

Planning for your remodeling project means also taking the time to take a look at your available design plans. You want your project to provide for your practical needs and suit your home’s decor.

That can be a tricky balance. Especially if you live in an older house that might require more significant reworking or a larger home that might need larger amenities.

Consider some of these tips to streamline the aesthetic and functional aspects of your projects.

Table of Contents

  • Plan for the Essentials
  • Choose the Appropriate Veneer
  • Utilize Space Efficiently
  • Experiment with Color

Plan for the Essentials

Always get the essentials out of the way before you finalize your planning. This means taking the time to adjust for things like an AC system installation or an entire electrical overhaul.

Make sure that these elements use the space of your walls effectively, as you do not want obtrusive units visible in the interior or exterior of your home.

Keep larger elements out of the way as much as you can. With some thorough planning and consultation with your contractor, you can make your home is safe and that the obtrusive, but necessary, elements of your home don’t interfere with your design.

Choose the Appropriate Veneer

The right surfaces to match your designs will make a tremendous difference. This means focusing not only on things like hardwood and tile, but also the trim and other decorative elements that will define your space.

Choose the right materials with the room in mind. Cooler, smoother tiles and elements can be perfect for places like the bathroom, while hardwood is perfect for dens and hallways.

Your choice of material will also largely depend on the feeling you want to have. For example, hardwood gives a living room a warm, natural quality.

Utilize Space Efficiently

Not every technical aspect of the remodel needs to be left bare. In addition to keeping the wires and pipes behind your walls, depending on where you are having the remodel done, you may choose to have any other additional elements hidden behind the necessary hardware.

Panels and small doors and windows can be the perfect solution to keeping thermostats and switches from appearing too obtrusive in your home. Again, going over the layout of the home with a contractor can help you plan ahead and hide the smaller, but still intrusive, parts of your home.

Experiment with Color

Though it may seem obvious, choosing the right color and type of paint can make a tremendous difference. This means not only in the final paint, but in the materials used for the specific installations.

New vent covers and grates can be chosen in a variety of finishes, such as bronze or copper, to stand out attractively against the rest of your home’s decor.

Go for contrast where possible, especially if you are planning on a graceful transition from one element to the next. With a smart use of contrast, even “ugly” elements like an AC unit can either go unnoticed or become a surprisingly attractive part of your home.

Like with any such projects, it is always a good idea to get the planning out of the way as early as possible.

Take a look at some of your standard designs and see how you can better adjust their aesthetics for a specific decor. Use software for this if you can handle such design tasks on your own.

This can involve collaborating with a professional to determine the best colors and textures, regardless of the area being remodeled.

It can be easy to spend less time on the parts of a remodel that seem less exciting. However, you home is made up of every part of it.

Thinking holistically can make even the most boring parts of your house a part of a shimmering, beautiful whole.
