5 Brilliant Ways to Make an Old Home More Beautiful

Written By Glenn Prescot

If you are looking for a home to buy, you should expand your horizons beyond just newly built houses. While new homes have certain advantages, they rarely have the same charm of a house that comes from another era.

The downside, of course, is some remodeling work may be required to really bring out the best in an old home. With that in mind, here are five strategies you can use to make an older home truly beautiful again.

Restore It to Its Original Style

If you own a home that is over 100 years old, you should give serious consideration to doing a complete restoration to bring that house back to near its original condition and styling.

Some old homes were modified over the years and made uglier in line with previously current trends. However, if your home was built in a Victorian style, why not restore it to its original design? You might even be able to find photos of your home from the time of its construction to use as inspiration.

Install a New Roof

One of the most distinctive features of a home is its roof. It also plays a very important role as well. It helps secure the structure and prevent moisture from leaking inside.

For example, if your old home has an old and damaged roof, its biggest problem may not be its appearance.

It could also lead to extensive damage to the house in general. Consider working with roofers to choose new roofing that is both beautiful and functional in regards to protecting your home.

You’ll want to make sure that your home is capable of supporting the new roofing and make the appropriate upgrades.

Work on Curb Appeal

It’s just not the home’s structure that makes a visual impact. It’s also what surrounds it. This is known as curb appeal, and it can make a huge difference in how a home is perceived even in regards to its monetary value.

Consider flowers, hedges, bushes, trees and more than can help accent the natural beauty of your home. A home’s beauty can be greatly elevated by the natural world.

Rethink Its Color Palette

A home remodel is a good time to rethink certain things regarding your home’s aesthetics. While you may want to keep the older architecture in place, no one is going to fault you for re-painting your home in more alluring colors.

This goes for both your inside walls and the exterior as well. Choose colors that breathe life into your rooms and enhance its appearance from the outside as well. A new paint job can breathe life into a seemingly dead home.

Theme Your Décor after the Restoration

Lastly, what you fill your home with also does a good deal to determine its look and feel. If you want to restore your home to its original classic style, try to fill it with décor that mimics that style.

This can include both antiques as well as modern décor that reflects that classical style. Consider working with an interior designer if you can afford it. You can find books about that interior design at your local library and look up designers who have been inspired by that design.

Overall, don’t completely discount older homes. For one, older homes were often built in very attractive styles.

In the onward pursuit of the new and fashionable, we can lose the truly beautiful things that can be found in the past.

It may take some effort to restore an old home and make it beautiful again. However, it may be well worth the effort.
