How Much Does it Cost to Move a Mobile/Manufactured Home?

Written By Glenn Prescot

Mobile homes are a popular housing choice for many people throughout the United States. They are cheap and relatively easy to maintain, and can come in a number of sizes and designs, depending on your needs and preferences.

These homes can be moved with you if you choose to relocate somewhere else, so you don’t have to think about buying and selling houses if you choose to move. Here’s a more detailed look into the costs of moving a mobile home:

What is a Mobile Home?

A mobile home isn’t as mobile as it sounds. It is not an RV that can just be driven from location to location.

Though you can consider a trailer a mobile home, they are a lot easier to move by being hooked on to the back of a truck and moved to the next location.

A mobile home, in the case of a manufactured mobile home, is a lot harder to move because it is essentially a built house on wheels.

There are a lot of factors that come into play when you talk about moving an entire mobile home. There are a lot more rules and regulations that these mobile manufactured homes need to follow to be considered.

They are also growing in popularity because they are cheaper to buy and can essentially move with you anywhere you choose to go in the country. But all that comes at a cost:

What It Costs to Move a Mobile Home?

The costs of moving a mobile home can vary state to state for the base price – after that you can add all the variable costs, depending on size, distance, weight, and permits.

All these factors have an impact on what the final cost will be. The estimated cost of moving a mobile home that is a single-wide (does not take up more than one lane on the road), and needs to be moved about 60 miles can cost anywhere between $3000 and $7000, depending on your movers and the other conditions of your house. A rough estimate of per-mile cost is around $5 to $10 per mile.

Moreover, moving a double-wide mobile home for the same distance can cost almost twice as the above cost.

The above are just estimates; other costs of insurance, permits, services to securely place the home at the new foundation etc can drastically increase this price.

The best way to find out how much moving your mobile home would cost is by getting a quote from a professional mover that is familiar with your exact details for the move and your home.

What Factors Affect the Cost of Moving a Mobile Home

It is not as easy as putting a standard price for every move. There are many factors that affect the price of your move. The major differences come in with the following factors:

Size

The size of your mobile home is one of the biggest factors that affect the cost of moving it. Logically, the bigger the home, the more it will cost to move it.

Some homes are too large to fit in one lane on the road; these homes have the extra cost of temporary road closure or a police escort while being moved.

Weight

The same way as size, the weight of your mobile home also matters. Older built homes typically weigh less than newer models. So, don’t be surprised if a home the same size as yours costs less to move; it probably just weighs less.

Condition

The condition of your home matters because your movers can only start moving your home once its condition is fit for the road.

If your house is old and in bad condition, the movers will have to make repairs to get it ready for the move; this could potentially cost you money.

Distance

Of course, the distance that you are moving your home is going to have an effect on the cost of the move. The shorter the distance, the lower the cost of the move; this is mainly because of gas consumption, but that’s not all the cost the moving company has to take on with longer distances.

Required Materials

Each move requires a number of different materials for it to take place. The materials can vary depending on the size, distance and condition of your mobile home. Your movers can break down the cost of these materials once they examine your home.

Permits

Depending on the state you are moving your mobile home to or within, there are permits you are required to get in order to be able to make the move.

Moving companies have information on these permits and are able to tell you exactly which ones you will need, according to your particular home and move.

Insurance

A lot can happen when transporting your home. You want to buy insurance that specifically covers your home during a move just to be sure.

Professional movers will also require you to buy liability coverage in case there is any damage done over the move. These are just precautionary but necessary measures you have to take.

We hope we could clarify some of the concerns and costs of moving a mobile home with the breakdown above!
